In 2023 Rowan Gate took on the partnership with Derby on their own.

We are proud to share our framework for learning and improvement called

“Rowan Gate Roots to Growth” which is built upon our school values.

Initial Teacher Training

Train to teach with us!

Our aim is to share our passion for Teaching and Learning.

Our initial teacher training package offers the opportunity to be part of a training programme, which supports the training of future leaders in teaching, by offering a bespoke and tailored approach to inspirational and outstanding beginning teachers with a passion for teaching to achieve Qualified Teacher Status. The programme has been designed to expose beginning teachers to school settings and develop their abilities through learning on the job.

Our training package is closely aligned to the requirements of our beginning teachers considering their own preferences for example location of the placement schools, Key Stage requirements etc, so each course is unique to the individual.

Although we have extensive experience in SEN and offer opportunities for a main or second placement in a SEN school we also offer mainstream opportunities either as a part or whole of the course.

Congratulations on taking the first step towards a career in teaching by researching programmes available to you! We hope you find this information useful and wish you the best of luck as you progress towards a career in teaching.

Below is some more information about the package we are proud to offer. We promote the fact that we are a fully inclusive and equal opportunities provider of ITT in Northamptonshire.

We pride ourselves on our personalised and bespoke approach. Our beginning teachers are sought after and feedback on our course is outstanding.

The University of Derby is our university provider. We are now recruiting for places for Primary School beginning teachers to start in September 2024.

How does the ITT programme work?

The programme is a school-based model of initial teacher training where you learn on the job. School groups work in partnership with one another and a university to deliver dynamic programmes of practical learning and academic study, allowing trainees to develop their skills and prepare for their career in teaching.

Beginning teachers gain a PGCE with QTS after their training year, allowing them to teach in schools across the UK and around the world.

Our programme

We are very proud of our collaborative partnership with the University of Derby, an experienced provider of school-based initial teacher training.

We offer the Primary School tuition-only route (Course Code H901) at Postgraduate Certificate of Education level. The University of Derby programmes were judged as “outstanding” by Ofsted in 2015. We work hard to deliver our bespoke ITT programme.

Our programme is heavily focussed on gaining practical hands on experience of being a teacher in the classroom; you will be working in school from day one. This is supplemented by weekly study days, led by experienced lecturers from the University of Derby in collaboration with a range of experts from our local schools.

Trainees do not need to travel to Derby for study days – these take place at a venue in Wellingborough and it is only necessary to travel to Derby up to five times throughout the year.

The taught and assessed element of the programme is highly structured and sets out weekly expectations upon the student, the school-based mentor and the school as a whole, so that the student gradually assumes more whole class teaching responsibility as the programme progresses. Course and training materials are clear and well structured so that our students know what is expected of them at all times.

Training Route

Please note, we only provide training-only routes on the programme, we do not offer any salaried positions.

Also referred to as the Non-Salaried route, this is a school-led, one-year initial teacher training programme that equips our beginning teachers with a wealth of classroom experience, a PGCE and QTS, subject to successful completion of the programme. No prior work experience is required although experience in a school based environment is highly desired.

You will work closely with an experienced mentor and will undertake school placements in contrasting settings. You are a part of the team from day one, you will work alongside the class teacher/mentor and you are not expected to teach classes independently until you and your school feel you are ready.

Places are self-funded; you have to pay tuition fees of £9,250 (subject to change) to University of Derby, our training provider.

Why train with us?

Our broad and inclusive training programme enables us, alongside our partner schools, to ensure the next generation of outstanding teachers are prepared for the challenges and rewards of primary teaching. We are committed to providing a supportive and personalised programme.

Support

Our dedicated team is with you every step of the way to make the training process as smooth as possible. Our support team includes school-based mentors (trained and inducted by the University of Derby), experienced link tutors (who make periodic visits to the beginning teacher in their placement school), the University Quality Lead, our Academic Partner Lead and the wider team here at Rowan Gate.  We work very closely together to support each individual beginning teacher with their bespoke training plan – a characteristic feature of our course. We also encourage a network for our beginning teachers, creating a peer-to-peer support environment.

Established Placement Partnerships

Alongside our excellent partnership with the University of Derby, we work collaboratively with schools across Northamptonshire and neighbouring counties to provide effective school placements. We can match beginning teacher to school intelligently, with connections to a wide range of schools across the county and beyond. This includes small and large primaries, special schools and units. Wherever possible, placements are made through consultation and we try to avoid long daily journeys (including during second placements).
